Green electricity isn't enough to curb global warming

"If the Paris targets are to be met, future CO2 emissions have to be kept within a finite budget," said climate scientist Elmar Kriegler.

June 26 (UPI) -- The adoption of clean energies to power electric grids won't be sufficient to meet the Paris climate targets established by the United Nations.

According to new research published in the journal Nature Climate Change, the continued use of fossil fuels for a variety of industrial processes, to power vehicles and heat buildings, is likely to push CO2 emissions beyond manageable levels.

"We focused on the role of fossil fuel emissions that originate in industries like cement or steel making, fuel our transport sector from cars to freight to aviation and goes into heating our buildings," Shinichiro Fujimori, researcher from the National Institute for Environmental Studies and Kyoto University in Japan, said in a news release. "These sectors are much more difficult to decarbonize than our energy supply, as there are no such obvious options available as wind and solar electricity generation."

According to Fujimori and his colleagues, green transportation is essential to meeting CO2 emissions targets.

The Paris agreement called on nations to progressively curtail CO2 emissions in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To meet this target, scientists suggest no more than 200 gigatons of CO2 can be released between now and 2100. If current fossil fuel-use trends continue, however, 4,000 gigatons of CO2 will have been emitted by the end of the century.

Authors of the new study argue that relying on carbon capture and storage technologies is a dangerous strategy. Pulling carbon from the atmosphere is likely a necessity, scientists admit, but major industries, including the transportation industry, must also end their use of fossil fuels.

Researchers argue that climate pledges made by individual countries must be strengthened sooner rather than later in order to prevent continued investments in fossil fuel infrastructure, investments that lock in continued CO2 emissions.

"Climate mitigation might be a complex challenge, but it boils down to quite simple math in the end: If the Paris targets are to be met, future CO2 emissions have to be kept within a finite budget," said Elmar Kriegler, a scientist at the Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research. "The more the budget is overrun, the more relevant will carbon dioxide removal technologies become, and those come with great uncertainties."

According to Krieglar, the precise CO2 budget may be difficult to calculate but the solution to the threat of global warming is clear.

  2. This topic is the most crucial subject in the world right now. It isn't about Trump or North Korea. Its about the survival of our planet and all the species on it. If we lose Earth then what Trump or Kim Jong-un did won't matter a darn.
The Paris Accord was too lenient when they set carbon targets. Even if they are met, it won't be enough to slow global warming. And frankly, not enough countries are serious about it as they drive us ( no pun intended ) toward our inevitable fried and toasted future.
    Excellent article and very important.
    Good work Knight Sha

  3. You are so very right , people should take heed at the importance that green electric is not enough , more is needed , we can't focus of just one thing , there is a lot of problems to solve , it involves everyone working together , that means putting Mr. Trump and his kindergarten antics on the back burner .If we stop paying so much attention to him and feeding his ego he will soon melt away like the ice and maybe drift down stream and never be heard of again .
We need younger minds that is open to all solutions , that's the only way we can accomplish anything is to work together . We have to believe in the scientists , some just know each other by name and reputation , they respect each other and work as a team .
Thank you very much aunt Jeannie.

  4. You hit on some very import points , we have to clean up our act , it's a long road back , we have to start someplace , groups of people could tackle the problems such as recycling all small things mount up to big things , the problem is to get everyone involved and become a doer and not a complainer to get their musty butts in gear and lets make it happen .
Your little brother / Bubba / CC started a movement on the compound , they check the garbage / trash to see if people are recycling their trash Hahahaha!!!
I am so very proud of you guys how you are taking to this like a duck to water .
    Love you Precious baby.

  5. None of us had the slightest idea that the planet was in this condition , before poppa passed he told us to never stop trying to find an answer to our problems , to combine our forces with others and we can come up with an answer .
Poppa and daddy taught us to learn new things because there's always something new to learn .
It was a thrill to meet Brooks Hays , he will be sending us articles from time to time , We ar building an army that can't be defeated , united we stand and getting stronger . Look out all you non-sayers and carpetbaggers , we are here to stay , Mother Earth belongs to the ones that will care for her .
    Love you mama
