Who does climate change affect?

Climate change is already devastating people's lives all over the world. And it's the world’s poorest people who are hardest hit, and who have least resources to cope. In the UK flooding is set to get worse with warmer, wetter summers, and food prices could rise as crops fail elsewhere in the world.

We're seeing increased drought, storms, floods, crop damage and sea-level rise. Millions of people are fleeing their homes as a result.

The UN Refugee Agency says climate change is a 'threat multiplier' in many of today’s conflicts — from Darfur to Somalia to Iraq and Syria.

The effects will get worse as temperatures rise further. So we must cut greenhouse gas emissions to stop temperatures rising. But people also need protection from the climate change we can no longer avoid: that means financial support for developing countries and legal protection for climate refugees.

What causes climate change?

Our planet supports life because of the greenhouse effect — a blanket of gases trapping some of the sun’s rays. But increase the amount of these gases, and more heat is trapped. This causes the planet to heat up, and leads to a more extreme climate.

Our planet is warmer now than at any point in the past 800,000 years, and heating up fast. This is mainly a result of the huge increase in the amount of coal, oil and gas we’ve been burning since the industrial revolution, pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Other things contribute to climate change too, such as deforestation, which means trees absorb less of these gases; and other greenhouse gases such as methane from cows.

  1. So very true Sha,
Climate change is affecting the lives of millions of people in developing countries. People who depend on what they can grow to live are facing floods, droughts, crop blights. So many are starving already and it can only get worse. We need to educate people about deforestation and the devastating effects it has on the planet. It has not slowed down much in the last decade.
Great article Sha. You and the Knights do an awesome job. I'm proud of you.
Lots of love from Aunt Jeannie

    1. Aunt Jeannie ,
there are so many things that is wrong , sometime you feel like you are fighting a losing batter , we can not quit now because of future generations , all the work we have done would be for a lost cause , poppa told us to never stop fighting for what was rightful ours , that is a world free from all harmful elements that includes the dum-dum in the White house , poppa said some may not agree with our decision to fight climate change it do not matter as long as we are right , he said he did not listen at the negative people when he started out and he stayed the course .
Jenny is writing a speech and Jonny is drawing her some graphics to show and tell at mama February 9 meeting .

    1. Hi Mama ,
Glad to see you and that you took our advice .
Mama I know it is a good thing to try and educate others on the plight of Mother earth , I notice more people are coming back to the meetings not for coffee and donuts or to get out the cold , they are taking a real interest in how climate change affects the weather , she told them to look how Harvey wrecked Houston and the ones that followed him.
Jenny told them see how climate change affect the dry places in California , when the fires was put out , the rains started and stopped and then there was the mudslides and it will only get worse .
      Love you mama
