Earth to Trump: There’s No Such Thing as “Beautiful, Clean Coal”

by Lauren Reid            January 31, 2018
Hypocrisy is the name of the game in Trump’s first official State of the Union address.
Donald Trump declared war on EPA regulations and cleaner energy alternatives during his State of the Union speech.

“We have ended the war on American energy. And we have ended the war on beautiful, clean coal.”

— Donald Trump, State of the Union, January 30th, 2018.

It is a stretch, to put it mildly, that the U.S. has officially ended its “war” on American energy. Domestic oil and natural gas production — which steadily increased through the Obama Administration — is booming, and expected to surpass the crude oil output from Saudi Arabia by 2019.

So rather than ending a war, he’s starting one — on EPA regulations and cleaner energy alternatives. His tired diatribes about coal, an industry that cannot keep pace with cheaper, more renewable resources, lacks a basic understanding of modern solutions and merely doubles down on prehistoric fossil fuel projects in the name of ‘political convenience’. Naturally, this was to be expected.

Trump's infrastructure plan would make it easier to build oil pipelines through national parks.

Leaked version of Trump infrastructure plan reveals another ‘political favor’ for oil, gas industry
Under the Trump administration's plan, pipelines through national parks would only need the approval of the secretary of interior.

Trump says that he has ended the war on clean coal. But coal consumption fell to its lowest level in 40 years in 2017. http://nyti.ms/2FvcmJB

The Longview Power Plant in West Virginia, which the 4 West mine in nearby Greene County, Pa., has supplied with thermal coal. The most successful Appalachian mines these days produce higher-quality coal for steel making.
Coal’s Decline Seems Impervious to Trump’s Promises
Domestic demand continues to fall as coal is displaced by natural gas in power plants. The impact is being felt at a Pennsylvania mine about to close.
Yet with multiple nods throughout the evening to the millions of Americans affected by wildfires, floods and hurricanes in 2017 — which cost countless lives, and record-breaking $306 billion in damages — the speech illustrated a staggering breadth of hypocrisy that our government would push for the same energy production methods that facilitated these catastrophes in the first place. It would almost be laughable if we didn’t find ourselves at such a critical and deadly juncture in the fight against climate change.

So he starts with praising the first responders on the front lines of climate chaos then praises Exxon for pouring more money into oil production, "beautiful" coal, and getting rid of pollution control regs for automakers. #SOTU

@JennDiColaMatos
I fail to see how the coal industry could be described as “beautiful.”

What we saw last night was Trump’s solemn promise to continue paving the way for projects that further devastate the health and wellbeing of American citizens and the environment around us.

.@realDonaldTrump says that "Together, we can do anything." We'd like to see American leadership on a comprehensive approach to averting the worst impacts of #climatechange. Let's start there, Mr. President. #SOTU

This includes allowing oil and gas companies to plow ahead with their plans to construct massive new pipelines across North America, threatening our drinking water and the rights of indigenous communities; It involves the opening of almost ALL of America’s coastline to oil drilling, enraging citizens and members of both political parties; It embraces the vast shrinking of federal lands and national monuments, for potential exploitation by the fossil fuel industry. And it’s not just the policies that are disastrous — the oil industry itself will stop at nothing to protect these aims and their profits, suing groups like Greenpeace as part of an insidious trend of silencing dissent around their environmentally destructive practices.
Thanx to Lauren Reid

  1. Wow! Lauren Reid nailed this one. The coal industry practically created global warming single-handed. Those mines were already dying a natural death in favor of other energy sources. Trump should never have tried to resurrect them. And he gives the oil companies leeway to destroy green spaces and oceans. The future is alternative fuels and energies. That is what he should have invested tax payers' money into.
    Great job Jonny
Excellent information and keep kicking Mr Chump in the butt.

    1. Aunt Jeannie,
I think Lauren Reid nailed this one also , she and others has been a great help to Jenny , Nanook and her knights , we met so many people that are environmentists since we started posting on Nanook (through emails , pamplets and letters), our fight is not in vain , people are beginning to notice that there are people all over the world that believe in climate change , more and more are jumping on board .
The oil companies give him money , if they stop giving him money he would not let them do these things.
Aunt Jeannie , I will give you an example ( We are in the business of gambling , hotels and resturants ) the company sents out incentives to players and hotel guests , the people come to play , stay or eat . You also have to be fair and treat them nice . Mr. Trump do not do that , he wants it all , they say he stiffs ( do not pay) some people that do work for him .
Thank you Aunt Jeannie , Love you a lot .

  2. I am so very proud you and Nanooks Knights are reaching out to all the people about climate change , I hope the use their voice to help fight for a cleaner planet .
There are other energy sources , much less expensive , tRUMPs and his wealthy friends don't want that to happen because it would be less money in their pockets .
We cannot not let them destroy more of our forests /green fields / oceans , we need those places to survive . No green space / ocean no food .
Go get tRUMp and his trolls , they are like the three monkeys , deaf / dumb /blind from all his lies and disrespecting women .
Keep up the good work .
    Love you to pieces.
